International Opportunities at UChicago

The Center for Global Health (CGH) facilitates international exchange opportunities for qualifying visitors from foreign institutions. CGH works with qualifying international visitors from Primary Partner institutions and non-partner institutions to facilitate pathways to learn and train under faculty members from the Biological Sciences Division and the University of Chicago Medical Center.

Eligibility Requirements

  • The applicant must be a student from an approved Authorized Partner Institution with the University of Chicago.
  • The applicant must currently be enrolled in her/his final year of a 4-year medical school, or beyond the 5th year of a 6- or 7-year medical education program.
  • The applicant must have completed all core clinical rotations (Internal Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Ob/Gyn, Psychiatry, Family Medicine).
  • The applicant must be highly recommended by her/his home institution and have an excellent academic record as demonstrated by her/his transcript.
  • For the purposes of this medical school elective, a B-1 visa is acceptable. Students from Visa Waiver Program countries may travel under ESTA authorization. Pritzker School of Medicine and the Center for Global Health do not process visa paperwork for international students. Students are required to obtain entry on their own.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Applicant must have a medical degree (i.e. MD or foreign equivalent) 
  • Applicant must currently be enrolled in a foreign graduate medical education program that is listed in the FAIMER International Medical Education Directory (IMED)
  • Applicant must have sponsorship from a foreign government or an academic institution listed in the IMED
  • Applicant must have a University of Chicago faculty sponsor who agrees to oversee the period of visitation and who will be responsible for guiding and monitoring the resident's training
  • Period of observation is limited to 30 days
  • Application must be received at least 12 weeks in advance of target start date

Eligibility Requirements

  • Clinical Observer must hold a medical license in her/his home country or may be a scientist, researcher, or another licensed individual.
  • Clinical Observer must have a faculty sponsor at the University of Chicago who agrees to oversee the period of visitation and who will be responsible for guiding and monitoring the training of the individual. 
  • Clinical Observer must have the sponsorship of a foreign academic institution, agency, or foreign government and have adequate evidence of financial support
  • Clinical Observer must have evidence of current personal health insurance. 
  • The faculty sponsor must present programmatic justification for the visit.
  • Clinical Observer may visit for any period of time between 5 days - 6 months. 
  • Application for Clinical Observer must be submitted by the hosting department to the departmental Academic Affairs coordinator at least 16 weeks in advance of target start date.
  • Clinical Observer will undergo a required health screening upon arrival to the University of Chicago.
  • If seeking observation for more than 30 days, the hosting department will arrange for additional training with the Office of Medical Center Compliance prior to to the applicant beginning.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Visiting Professionals must hold a valid medical license in another state or country and may also be a scientist, researcher or other licensed individual.
  • Visiting Professionals must visit for 5 business days or less
  • Visiting Professionals must have a faculty sponsor at the University of Chicago who agrees to oversee the period of visitation and who will be responsible for guiding and monitoring the training of the individual. 
  • Application for Visiting Professionals must be submitted to the UChicago hosting department at least 30 days in advance of target start date.

Eligibility Requirements

  • This is a clinical, basic, translational, or other research opportunity.
  • The Visiting Scholar must hold a full-time academic appointment within his/her home institution (i.e. assistant/associate professor, professor, lecturer, instructor, reader, or other foreign equivalent). 
  • The Visiting Scholar must have a faculty sponsor at the University of Chicago who agrees to oversee the period of visitation and who will be responsible for guiding and monitoring the individual. 
  • The faculty sponsor must present programmatic justification for the visit.
  • The Visiting Scholar may visit for no more than one year. Extensions may be requested but approval is not assured.
