A satellite session preceding the 10th Annual Consortium of Universities for Global Health, the NCI's 7th Annual Symposium on Global Cancer Research addressed cancer research and oncology in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) and focused on the need for cancer control to become a global priority. Cancer research and treatment have become increasingly high-tech and high-priced in the Global North and West. Meanwhile, the Global South is faced with population growth and increased burden of cancer without adequate resources to provide quality cancer care. This creates a massive need for development and implementation of innovative and context-specific solutions to dealing with cancer in LMIC. At the same time, opportunities for eradication of one of the most prevalent and devastating malignancies in LMIC exist: vaccination against HPV to prevent cervical cancer. Lessons learned in LMIC can benefit underserved US and immigrant populations living in low-resource settings. The satellite convened more than 35 researchers from countries in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Europe and North America and hosted a lively poster session with more than 2 dozen contributors.
