External Opportunities and Fellowships Abroad

Albert Schweitzer Fellowship

Purpose:   Send fellows to Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Lambaréné, Gabon for three month projects.
Eligibility:   Open to fourth-year medical students and any students/recent graduates of graduate degree programs in public health or a related discipline. Fluency in French is required.
Funds:   Fellows’ expenses (airfare, room, board, immunizations) are paid for by the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship.

American Association of University Women-International Fellowships

Purpose:   Support women in research or full-time graduate and post-graduate study.
Eligibility:   Not US citizen or permanent resident of the U.S.

American Cancer Society

Purpose:   Provide one year of advanced training in clinical oncology to physicians and dentists from other countries at participating U.S. cancer centers.
Eligibility:   Individuals must be accepted by eligible institutions that may then apply for funding.

American College of Physicians International Fellowship Exchange Program

Purpose:   To allow mid-career internists to participate in observational, short-term fellowships under the mentorship of senior faculty/department heads in medical institutions in the United States and Canada.
Eligibility:   Internists or sub-specialists of internal medicine who are ACP members, fellows or are willing to become members upon selection.

Benjamin Kean Traveling Fellowship in Tropical Medicine

Purpose:   Support those who pursue clinical tropical medicine or tropical medicine research electives in areas afflicted by tropical diseases.
Eligibility:   Must be a full-time student in a North American accredited school of medicine at the time of the application and at the time of the elective.

Chicago French Medical Student Exchanges

Purpose:   4-8 week long international health-service learning opportunities in a variety of settings in France. United States and Canada.
Eligibility:   Medical students in good academic standing.
Funds:   Students must pay for the cost of their own program; however, there is a special scholarship program - International Health Fellowship (IHF).

Child Family Health International

Purpose:   4-8 week long international health-service learning opportunities in a variety of settings.
Eligibility:   Medical students, residents and post-baccalaureate pre-medical students

Christine Mirzayan Science and Technology Policy Graduate Fellowship Program

Purpose:   12 week program to engage graduate students in the science and technology element of national policy-making.
Eligibility:   Graduate students, postdoctoral scholars and those who have completed graduate/postdoctoral research within the last five years.

Doris Duke Clinical Research International Fellowship for Medical Students

Purpose:   To encourage medical students to pursue careers in clinical research by giving students the opportunity to take a year to experience clinical research first hand.
Eligibility:   Medical students in good standing who have completed two or more years of medical school prior to the start of the fellowship.
Funds:   $28,000 stipend; health insurance; financial support to attend annual CRF meeting, and supplementary research and training funds.

Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation Two-Year International Scholars Award

Purpose:   Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation Two-Year International Scholars Award
Eligibility:   Developing country nationals who are also working in developing countries. Must be a health care professional who has specific training/experience with HIV/AIDS and holds an M.D./Ph.D.
Funds:   Two years salary support and up to $10,000 for supplies or travel. Annual salary ranges from $10,000 to $30,000.

Fogarty International Center Clinical Research Scholars Program

Purpose:   One-year clinical research training experience for graduate-level U.S. students in the health profession. This is an opportunity for highly motivated individuals to experience mentored research training at top-ranked NIH-funded research centers in developing countries such as Bangladesh, Botswana, Brazil, China, India, Peru, and others.
Eligibility:   Graduate level U.S. students in health professions; also third-year medical students.
Funds:   Approximately $18,000-$20,000 per year with an additional $6,000 for travel, insurance and educational materials.

Hughes Medical Institute Research Training Fellowships for Medical Students

Purpose:   A year of full-time biomedical research training for medical and dental students.
Eligibility:   Must be enrolled in a U.S. medical or dental school. The fellowship research may be conducted at any academic or nonprofit institution in the U.S. (except NIH).

Infectious Disease Society of North America-Summer Scholarship

Purpose:   Summer scholarships to medical students with mentorship by an IDSA member or fellow.
Eligibility:   Any medical student interested in pursuing research activity on pediatric or adult infectious diseases. These activities may involve either clinical/research activities.

Purpose:   Support scholars from any country and any discipline for temporary visits to institutions in any safe country for a period of 3 months to a year.

International Health Central American Institute-Graduate Junior Researcher Fellowship

Purpose:   To support one year of independent study and research, including two week-long seminars in tropical diseases and diseases of poverty. Applicants must have an existing project idea that falls under the scope of Evidence Based Medicine and health policy.
Eligibility:   Professionals in health science (including medicine, epidemiology, and nursing) who are 45 years old or younger. Training and research experience in public health, epidemiology or health economics is preferred. Applicants must have an advanced command of English and intermediate Spanish proficiency, as well as research publications within the past two years.

Purpose:   Introduce scientists and engineers to international collaborative research opportunities.
Eligibility:   Must be a U.S. citizen and have been awarded a Ph.D. within two years of the application deadline.

International Service Learning

Purpose:   Present unique and exciting opportunity for students to experience field clinical work first hand in the rural and urban areas of Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama, Belize, Mexico, Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda.

International Society for Infectious Diseases Scientific Exchange Fellowship Program

Purpose:   Promote collaboration among researchers and extend infectious disease researchers’ experience beyond their region.

UICC International Cancer Technology Transfer Fellowships (ICRETT)

Purpose:   To facilitate rapid international transfer of cancer research and clinical technology.
Eligibility:   Appropriately qualified investigators, pathologists, epidemiologists, cancer registrars, behavioral scientists, tobacco control activists, laboratory technicians, clinicians and general practitioners

Josephine de Karman Fellowships

Purpose:   Support students in any discipline.
Eligibility:   Candidates for a Ph.D. who will defend their dissertations by June 2010 and undergraduates entering their senior year.

Kellogg Health Scholars Program

Purpose:   Two-year postdoctoral fellowships at eight training sites.
Eligibility:   Must have completed all requirements for professional and post-professional training at doctoral level.
Funds:   $62,000 in the first year and $63,000 in the second year. Additionally sites may pay up to $3,000 for moving expenses.

Luce Scholars Program

Purpose:   The Luce Scholars Program awards scholarships and sends a select group of young scholars to various locations in Asia for a year in their field of interest.
Eligibility:   American citizens with at least a bachelor's degree, no more than 29 years of age at the time they enter the program and cannot have had significant exposure to Asian culture or Asian studies.

MAP International Medical Fellowship

Purpose:   To encourages lifelong involvement in global health issues by providing selected medical students firsthand exposure in a Christian context to the health, social and cultural characteristics of a developing world community.

Purpose:   To provide up to 5 years of support consisting of 1-2 years of mentored support followed by 3 years for independent support for post-doctoral candidates with independent research positions.

O.C. Hubert Student Fellowship in International Health

Purpose:   Designed to encourage students to think of public health in a global context.
Eligibility:   You must be attending an LCME- or AOA-accredited medical school. You must be a rising or current third- or fourth-year student. You must be either a U.S. citizen or valid green card holder.
Funds:   Each year, a limited number of fellows are selected to participate in the program and receive a stipend of $3,000 to cover travel costs. Fellowship opportunities vary each year.

PAHO/WHO Fellowships

Purpose:   To provide opportunities for advanced study in public health fields that are traditionally unavailable in the fellow’s home country.
Eligibility:   Must have completed training and have at least two years of professional experience in their field.
Funds:   Covers the cost of travel directly related to the purposes of the fellowship including international travel and travel within the country of study, a daily living allowance, health insurance coverage if required by the country of study and tuition fees if applicable

Purpose:   Three year fellowship to support postdoctoral research training in biomedical sciences.
Eligibility:   Must hold or be in the final stages of obtaining an M.D., Ph.D. or other equivalent degree. Also, applicant must not have no more than one year of postdoctoral research experience at the time of the deadline for submitting the application, and must have received a PhD (or D.Phil. or equivalent) degree no more than two years before the deadline, or an M.D. degree no more than three years before the deadline

Stanford – NBC News Fellowship in Media and Global Health

Purpose:   To provide medical students, residents, fellows and/or faculty with 12-months of practical training in global health reporting using a variety of media platforms including: print, photography, television, social networking and fundamentals in journalism and communications.
Eligibility:   Medical students who have completed their first two years of medical school, residents, fellows and faculty are eligible.
