Global Health Week 2013

CGH is excited to announce our second annual Global Health celebration, which will take place on The University of Chicago campus from October 16th to October 18th. This year, we are planning a series of events spanning multiple days with the aim of introducing students, professionals, and the academic community across all sectors to new opportunities and insights in the field of global health. Our events will include a career panel, a student-led global health research symposium, and a Keynote panel discussion. The Keynote panel discussion will be the highlight of the week and will be followed by a reception where photographs from our annual photo contest will be on display and winners announced.


Career Panel: Careers in Global Health

October 16

Join us for a dynamic panel discussion on careers in global health. This will be our first of a weeklong series of events for our annual global health celebration and will include panelists from a variety of disciplines who will share their unique experiences and perspectives on the different careers in global health. The panel will be moderated by Dr. Sola Olopade, the clinical director of the Center for Global Health and will include Dr. Nirav Shah, Dr. Evan Lyon, Professor Eugene Raikhel, Dr. Fred Ssewamala, and Professor Alicia Menendez. Don't miss out on this exciting opportunity to network, ask questions, and hear from experts in the global health field.


Keynote Address with Panel Discussion

October 17

This Keynote Address and Panel Discussion will be the highlight of our second annual Global Health Week celebration. The Keynote Address will be delivered by Ambassador Nancy Brinker, Founder and Chair of Global Strategy, Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The panel discussion titled "An Integrated Approach to Women's Health" will feature the following panelists:

  • Kenneth Alexander, MD, Professor and Chief, Infectious Diseases, Department of Pediatrics, Comer Children’s Hospital
  • Ambassador Nancy Brinker
  • Alicia Cook, Community Health Activist and Breast Cancer Survivor
  • Doyin Oluwole, MD, MRCP, FRCP, Executive Director, Pink Ribbon Red Ribbon (PRRR)
  • Gonzalo Perez, MD, Executive Director, RDMA Organization, Medical Affairs – Merck Vaccines
  • Fred Ssewamala, PhD, Associate Professor of Social Work and International Affairs, Columbia University School of Social Work

The panel will be moderated by Dr. Funmi Olopade, MD, FACP, OON, Walter L. Palmer Distinguished Service Professor of Medicine and Human Genetics, Associate Dean for Global Health, Director, Center for Clinical Cancer Genetics and Global Health.

Global Health Student Research Symposium

October 18

The Center for Global Health’s first-ever annual Global Health Student Research Symposium will provide an opportunity for University students who have been involved in global health research to present their work to peers, faculty, staff and the University community at large. The symposium will features projects from all disciplines and will encourage interdisciplinary discourse allowing students to learn from each other about a broad range of global health topics. Students' posters will be displayed in the BSLC lobby all day followed by oral presentations in the evening. Join us for this exciting event that will mark the end of our annual global health week.
